Don’t miss this springtime Jazz Festival in Paris

This year, from May 21st to June 1st , the Saint Germain des Près Jazz Festival will take place for the 15th time. It’s still a young event, but its reputation for excellence and openness draws jazz fans and the top musicians from throughout the world. The Hotel Jacques de Molay is situated conveniently just across the Seine from the Saint Germain des Près district, and we give this fabulous festival our heartiest recommendation.

Saint Germain des Près; the cradle of jazz in Europe

Saint Germain des Près is the ideal location for a jazz festival. This artistic and Bohemian quarter was a hotbed of jazz experimentation and innovation in the middle of the last century, in the days when the likes of Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut would hang out in smoky cellars and clubs there while listening to this form of music.

Since 2001 the Saint Germain des Près Jazz Festival has played host to stars of the jazz world such as Norah Jones and Manu Dibango. Some 1,000 artistes have played more than 400 shows here over the last 14 years. The annual event brings concerts to exclusive venues such as the Odeon Theatre and the Sorbonne, canal boats and churches. There are also plenty of open air gigs that are free to the public. New and rising musical talents are actively encouraged, so you may just discover the jazz stars of the future. Additionally, there are exhibitions, interviews and musician’s workshops held in various locations.

Already scheduled to perform this year are jazz superstars such as Aldo Romano, Stéphane Guillaume, Kyle Eastwood and L’Esprit Jazz Big Band. There will also be a festival climaxing concert by the superb Lisa Simone amidst the neo-classical splendour of the Odeon Theatre.
